What “Handmade” Actually Means in My Workshop

There’s a moment most people don’t see when it comes to handmade work.

It’s usually somewhere between “this looked simple on the screen” and “why is this one piece suddenly behaving like it has its own ideas.”

That’s the bit I tend to live in.

Faelight Treasures started with a love of making things that feel personal—pieces that carry names, dates, stories, and little moments that matter. But the longer I’ve done this, the more I’ve realised something important: handmade doesn’t just mean “made by hand.” It means made with time, attention, and a fair bit of problem-solving when the wood decides it’s got other plans.

The part people don’t always see

When you order something personalised, what you’re really getting isn’t just the finished piece. You’re getting the bit in the middle too.

The measuring. The testing. The small adjustments. The “I swear I set this correctly” moments. The sanding. The re-sanding because I wasn’t happy with it the first time.

And yes—sometimes the quiet conversation with myself that sounds a lot like:

“You’ve done this before. Why is this suddenly complicated?”

Why it takes time (and why that matters)

Every piece that leaves my workshop is made individually. Not rushed, not mass-produced, and not pulled off a shelf that’s already decided how your day is going to go.

Different types of wood behave in different ways. Hardwoods like walnut engrave and finish differently to softer woods like pine, and more exotic woods like padouk can have their own personality entirely when it comes to tone, grain, and how they respond to the laser. Even the smallest personalised detail needs checking twice—because once it’s engraved, it’s permanent.

There’s no undo button in laser engraving. Trust me, I’ve looked.

The quiet beauty of it

What I love most is that every item already has a story forming before it even leaves me.

It might become a wedding keepsake. A gift for someone’s new home. A small reminder of a moment they don’t want to forget.

That’s why I still hand-finish everything. Because those details matter more than speed ever will.

A little truth from the workshop

If you’ve ever wondered why custom pieces take a little longer, this is it.

It’s not because things are slow.

It’s because they’re being made properly.

And I think that still counts for something.

Until next time

Thank you for stopping by the Faelight Journal. I hope this gave you a little glimpse behind the scenes—and maybe a bit more appreciation for the slightly chaotic, very human process behind handmade work.

Until next time, keep finding a little magic in everyday moments. 😁🧚🏻‍♀️
